Lack of market for wind power in UK exposed as protest ends

The two-week long protest by workers at a wind turbine factory on the Isle of Wight ended today.

The workers had been protesting at plans to close the factory owned by Dutch company Vestas Wind Systems and relocate production to the US.

Six remaining protesters ended their sit-in protest after bailiffs entered the factory, following a court order to have them removed.

The Government was reported to have offered financial help to keep the factory open and save the 625 jobs that will be lost.

Vestas said the demand for turbines in the UK was too low and that most of the turbine blades made at the plant were for the USA market and not for Europe.

The exported plastic is meant to be recycled under UK conditions and standards, but often is not, undermining bona fide UK recycling firms who face falling prices, reduced turnover, collapsing profits, and all too often, closure.
